Pink's NFL Picks 12-24-09

Last week’s record, 10-6; for the season, 146-78

Pick of the Week, 1-0; for the season, 12-3

First of all, I left off the Miami/Tennessee game, and I must be honest, I had the Dolphins. As for the rest of the card, I had the Carolina upset over the Vikings and my Pick of the Week squeezed by, but how many people had the Bucs winning in Seattle? Not me.

With the holidays upon us, our paper takes a week off after Christmas, so I’ll be giving you this week’s picks and the following week’s Quick Picks. Without the benefit of knowing the previous week’s results, it will be tough, but I can handle it. The next time we get together it will be playoff time, but until then, have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Friday, Dec. 25

San Diego at Tennessee — I think the Chargers are as good as anybody in the league, but this game has little meaning now that they have locked up their division. The Titans on the other hand need a win to keep their slim playoff chances alive. I’ll take Tennessee in this one, 21-17.

Sunday, Dec. 27

Buffalo at Atlanta — This is a pride team game for both teams. Both teams are headed in the right direction, but I think the Falcons are further along. I’ll take the Falcons, 27-19.

Kansas City at Cincinnati — The Chiefs have continued to play hard but should be no match for the Bengals on the road. I’ll make this my Pick of the Week. I’ll take Cincinnati, 23-13.

Oakland at Cleveland — The Raiders have kind of snuck under the radar with their five wins, and the Browns have come alive of late as well. This should be a good game, but I think the Browns win it, 24-20.

Seattle at Green Bay — The Seahawks don’t deserve to win another game after losing to Bucs at home. I’ll stick with the Packers, 31-17.

Baltimore at Pittsburgh — Big Ben is an elite QB and that means the Steelers are capable of beating most anyone. The Ravens are tough, but Steeler Pride takes over once again.  I’ll stick with Pittsburgh, 24-19.

Houston at Miami — This should be a really good game. The Texans are young and getting better, and the same goes for the Dolphins. I’ll stick with the home team. Dolphins win it, 24-23.

Jacksonville at New England — The Jags are tough, but the Patriots are undefeated at home. I’ll stick with New England, 23-17.

Tampa Bay at New Orleans — The Bucs came alive this past week, but I look for the Saints to rebound from the Cowboy loss in preparation for the playoffs. I’ll take the Saints, 33-17.

Carolina at New York Giants — With a big win over the Redskins, the Giants have kept their playoff hopes alive. They need help from either Dallas or Green Bay, but in the interim they better not overlook the Panthers like the Vikings did. Eli and the offense are clicking, but the defense must play well and they will. I’ll stick with the Giants, 31-20.

St. Louis at Arizona — The Cards have clinched their division but they can’t afford to take a week off. The Rams are bad and should go back to Los Angeles. I’ll take the Cards, 31-20.

Detroit at San Francisco — There isn’t much to say about the Lions, but as for the 49ers, they will play tough and win this one at home, 23-13.

New York Jets at Indianapolis — The Jets will be legitimate contenders as soon as they develop an offense. Until then, they will remain pretenders. The Colts continue to roll on, 24-13.

Denver at Philadelphia — Denver needs a win, while the Eagles are rolling. A Denver loss really opens up a lot of possibilities for AFC teams looking for the wild card. I like that idea. I’ll take the Eagles, 31-20.

Dallas at Washington — The Redskins forgot to show up against the Giants but they almost always play the Cowboys tough. Dallas can’t afford an upset here, but you never know. I’ll stick with the Cowboys, 23-17.

Monday, Dec. 28

Minnesota at Chicago — After watching the Vikings lose to the Panthers, it looks to me like everyone knows exactly when Farve is going to pass and when Peterson is going to run. I think it’s time for the Bears to pull off an upset. Chicago wins, 23-19.

Quick Picks

Jan. 3, 2010 (final week of the regular season)

San Francisco at St. Louis — I’ll take the Niners, 23-17.

Philadelphia at Dallas — Eagles win, 33-31.

New England at Houston — Texans win, 28-24.

Cincinnati at NYJ — Bengals win it, 20-13.

Atlanta at Tampa Bay — Falcons win, 27-20.

New Orleans at Carolina — Panthers in an upset, 26-24.

Pittsburgh at Miami — Dolphins win, 23-21.

Jacksonville at Cleveland — Browns win, 20-17.

Chicago at Detroit — Lions win it, 23-19.

Washington at San Diego — Chargers win it, 30-23.

Tennessee at Seattle — Titans win it, 28-24.

Kansas City at Denver — Broncos win, 20-17.

Baltimore at Oakland — Raiders win, 21-19.

Green Bay at Arizona — Cards win, 30-27.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
