Pine Plains notches first win of season over Webutuck

WEBUTUCK — Despite a third-quarter run by the Warriors, the Stissing Mountain girls varsity basketball team held on for their first win of the season, 39-24, last Friday, Dec. 11.

Scoring for the Bombers came from Deanna Strang (with 12 points), Jordyn Funk (with 10 points) and Nikki Lengyel (with 7 points). For Webutuck, Kaelan Reynolds tallied 11 points, while Brooke Dahoney added five and Meagan McCoy netted four with 10 rebounds. Brielle Williams came down with seven boards as well.

The matchup saw both teams coming off significant losses to larger schools. Earlier last week Stissing Mountain fell to John Coleman Catholic 65-13 and Webutuck lost to Spackenkill 68-17.

Friday’s game saw the Bombers jump out to a 22-12 halftime lead. While both squads had plenty of opportunities, the Bombers had a higher shot percentage and Webutuck found itself in foul trouble early. Tallying up seven fouls by the end of the first quarter, they settled in and allowed only three more before halftime and another three in the entire second half.

A few Webutuck baskets starting the third quarter brought the game to 22-16, the closest it would be for the rest of the match. However the Bombers responded with a 9-0 run to finish the third quarter 31-16.

“Webutuck played very hard yesterday, said Eric Sullivan, coach for the Bombers. “They chipped away at our lead to start the second half and they made good adjustments, but our girls weathered that and got back to what we were doing well.

Webutuck coach Trisha Lawrence said she’s seen significant improvement already this season, and with an athletic group of girls the season can only get better.

“Right now we’re struggling with offense, she said. “We’re just practicing our shots. Our defense is alright, and I think everything else is going to come along.

This is the first year of coaching for both Lawrence and Sullivan.

“We said our goal is to be better today than we were yesterday, explained Sullivan. “We hope to continue playing well against the schools that we can be competitive with, and the schools that are bigger and have more experience, well, we just have to keep improving our basketball skills.

The next Stissing Mountain home game for the girls team will be a tournament on the Monday and Tuesday after Christmas, Dec. 28 and 29. Check next week’s issue of The Millerton News for a preview of the tournament. The next home game for Webutuck will be Friday, Dec. 18, against Ellenville at 6 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
