Gilbert winter teams built on youth and optimism

WINSTED — Last season the Gilbert winter program was marked by unpredicted accomplishment. Gilbert Athletic Director Mike Gamari and his staff of dedicated coaches face the new season with a strong return of student athletes and with immense optimism — despite a number of key losses to graduation.

The Yellowjackets’ boys basketball squad will see head coach Mark Douglass back at the helm this season. They suffered an enormous loss in the graduation of their top scorer and captain Zac Tuozzo. Along with Tuozzo went key players Nate Lapointe and John Tess-man.

“We have a good youth return, said Gamari. “We are optimistic and look to improve.

There are indeed severe gaps in the one-time champion team, but plenty of last year’s Jackets will be returning this season, including Kyle Jones, the Brochu brothers, Alec and Austin, and the Romero brothers, Elyde and Dan.

It will not take a great deal to improve last season’s girls basketball record — just one win will suffice. The Lady Jackets lost seniors Katie LaChance and Kate Williams, two of their hardest working players and top scorers from last year, but will see the return of leading scorer and center Courtney Cesca.

Head coach Paul Grossman returns this year to continue the team’s rebuilding process.

“Paul always returns with optimism, said Gamari. “We have a number of players returning who saw time last year. That was a key element of Grossman’s late-season strategy last year — giving his team’s JV subs plenty of varsity-level game time to prepare them for a greater role this year.

Gilbert’s swim team finished last seaon with middle-of-the-road results, and Gamari said he expects the same from the team this year. Nick Berger will be a crucial return for the squad and head coach Harry Dauphinais. Gamari said the team will be able to compete with schools similar in size to their own but will continue to struggle against the larger swim programs such as Shepaug.

The crown jewel in Gilbert’s winter program last season was a wrestling team that bulldozed their way from the start of the year into states, maintaining a near perfect record along the way.

“It is going to be difficult to repeat such an exceptional season, said Gamari. Head coach Doug Smith returns, but the team lost six Berkshire Leaguers to graduation.

“The numbers for the entire winter program look good, said Gamari. Gilbert’s winter sports program will have to battle on without a number of notable players from last year but is counting on strong returns, an influx of new players, an experienced coaching staff and unwavering optimism to rebuild a winter program with room for improvement.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
