Janet (Jenks) Burnett

MILLERTON — Janet (Jenks) Burnett, 99, died Dec. 5, 2009,  at Noble Horizons, a few months short of her 100th birthday.

A lifelong resident of Millerton, she was born April 29, 1910, the only child of the late Josephine (Traver) and Miles Jenks.

Janet graduated from Millerton High School in 1926, and from Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., in 1930.

In 1966, she married Erry Burnett in South Hadley. Later,  the couple moved to Janet’s family home on Park Street in Millerton. Erry Burnett died in 1977. They had no children.

In her early years, she worked in her father’s insurance business and with his successor. She was a staunch supporter of the Millerton Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for many years.

Janet was an avid reader and her house is so full of books that some are between the stair banisters.

Janet had no siblings and out-lived all her close relatives. She is survived by six second-generation cousins.

A memorial service will be held at the Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton on Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. The service will be conducted by the Rev. John Ferguson, a personal friend and former minister of the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Millerton Presbyterian Church, the Irondale Cemetery Association, or Mt. Holyoke College.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
