Pink's NFL Picks — December 4, 2009

Last week’s record, 10-6; for the season, 113-63

Pick of the Week, 1-0; for the season, 9-3

To begin with, Housatonic played tough, but a late turnover clinched the Berkshire Bowl victory for the Gilbert-Northwestern Yellowjackets. I also managed to squeeze by with my Pick of the Week, but all and all, it was an average week at best.

It’s hard to believe, but there are only five weeks left in the regular season. There are some good games on tap for this week, so let’s get on with it.

Thursday, Dec. 3

New York Jets at Buffalo — It is tough to get a read on these two teams: They’re both up and down. I’m not sold on the Jets by any means, and because there’s a good chance for foul weather, the Bills will be tough to beat at home. I’ll stick with Buffalo, 17-13.

Sunday, Dec. 6

St. Louis at Chicago — The Bears are fading fast and the Rams are just plain bad. It’s hard to imagine any fan getting up for this game. I’ll stick with the Bears in this sleeper, 24-19.

Houston at Jacksonville — Once again both teams are still alive in the playoff race, but it seems neither team is consistent enough to make the postseason. Jacksonville played horribly last week, while the Texans put up a good fight against the Colts. With that said, the Jags will play well this week and the Texans won’t. I’ll take the Jags, 24-21.

Detroit at Cincinnati — The Lions are going nowhere this year, while the Bengals appear poised for a solid run in the playoffs. Enough said. I’ll take Cincinnati as my Pick of the Week, 27-13.

Tampa Bay at Carolina — The Bucs are well out of it and, quite frankly, I think Carolina is, too. Let’s go with the home team. The Panthers win it, 20-10.

Denver at Kansas City — I know the Chiefs are out of it, but you can’t overlook them at home. Denver played well in beating the Giants, but that may not be saying much. This is a very important game for the Broncos so I’ll stick with them, 27-20.

Tennessee at Indianapolis — The difference that Vince Young has made in Tennessee is just short of amazing. It is equally amazing how the Colts continue to win regardless of injuries. I’m a Jeff Fisher fan, so I’m pulling for the Titans to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. The Titans squeak by, 20-19.

Philadelphia at Atlanta — This is a big game for the Eagles and a huge game for the Falcons. I’m still pulling for the Falcons, but with quarterback Ryan out, it will be tough to win. Even so, I’ll go with Atlanta, 33-27.

New Orleans at Washington — Look out, Saints fans. If there was ever a chance for a letdown game, this is it. Drew Brees is as good as anybody in the league at quarterback, but the Redskins defense will certainly test him. In the end, Brees will find a way. The Saints win it, 27-17.

Oakland at Pittsburgh — The Steelers are on life support and must win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive. There will be no upset in this game. Big Ben will be back and the Steelers get back on track, 24-13.

San Diego at Cleveland — The Browns would have a chance in this game if they had an offense. Cleveland will play tough, but in the end the Chargers win, 23-13.

Dallas at New York Giants — The Giants continue to give up too many points and that will not serve them well against the Cowboys. As for Dallas, you never know which team is going to show up. This could be a real dumb pick, but for some unknown reason I think the Giants win this game, 24-23.

San Francisco at Seattle — The loser of this game may very well be out of the playoff hunt. With that said, I think the 49ers stay alive for another week with a 20-17 victory.

Minnesota at Arizona — I should add the Cards to the list of most unpredictable teams in the NFL. Even on the road, you have to like the Vikings because they are just plain playing great. Vikings win this one, 33-27.

New England at Miami — Both of these teams are coming off bad losses. The Dolphins fell apart late against the Bills and the Patriots got blown out by the Saints. I never like the road team coming off a Monday night loss, so I’ll go with the Dolphins, 23-20.

Monday, Dec. 7

Baltimore at Green Bay — The Packers are definitely alive in the race for the wild card and the same can be said for the Ravens. Look for the Packers to play well at home and win, 27-20.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
