Girls basketball gives thanks

WEBUTUCK — The Webutuck High School’s varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams raised $500 for a national event benefitting the St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, following a 5K walk last Saturday, Nov. 21, in Poughkeepsie.

Pledges started coming in for the teams a few weeks ago. First year varsity coach Trisha Lawrence said that when she presented them with the idea the girls were excited to help out.

"We’re trying to get the girls more involved with the community," Lawrence explained, "and we’re hoping that in return we might get more of the community supporting us at our games."

Lawrence and senior Kaelan Reynolds both participated in the "Give Thanks. Walk." at the Poughkeepsie Galleria. More than 40 communities around the country held similar walks that day for the cause. Junior varsity coach Ann Sartori was also there to support the Webutuck teams. The event consisted of a full six loops around the lower level of the mall.

"It was a great turnout and a lot of people walked," said Lawrence after the event. The basketball teams plan on supporting the fundraiser and participating again next year, shooting for an even higher fundraising goal, she added.

The girls season begins on Dec. 8 at Spackenkill; their first home game will be played on Friday, Dec. 11 against Pine Plains. The junior varsity game begins at 4:15 p.m.; the varsity match will be held at 6 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
