Fire displaces Pine Plains families

PINE PLAINS — A fire on Stissing Avenue on the morning of Nov. 12 displaced two families from their homes, according to Pine Plains Fire Chief Tom McGhee.

The fire started around 7:30 a.m. and was brought under control by 9 a.m. There were no injuries. McGhee reported that according to the arson investigation team, the fire was ruled accidental electrical.

The fire started in the upstairs home of Rob Decker and his family. Decker is first assistant chief of the Pine Plains Hose Company.

McGhee said he believed the family downstairs had gotten power turned back on in their home, but the Decker family’s half of the house is uninhabitable.

Fire departments in Pine Plains, Stanford and Milan, along with manpower from the districts in Fire Battalion 4, responded to the fire.

“I think everybody worked well together and made an excellent save, McGhee said. “But it’s devastating for the family.

Battalion Coordinator Lennie Morrison has helped set up an account at Stissing National Bank in Pine Plains for the family.

“This fire put the two families out on the street, Morrison said “What the fire doesn’t [destroy], the smoke gets to and it doesn’t come out.

Morrison said the American Red Cross and Adopt-a-Family have done an excellent job of assisting the family. Fires that have displaced families from their homes have happened before in this area, Morrison said, and the local departments try to assist families in need as much as possible.

Anyone interested in donating to the Decker fund may send checks, Attn: Decker Fund, in care of Ibis Guzman, Stissing National Bank, PO Box 651, Pine Plains, NY 12567 or drop donations off at the bank in person. The Stissing National Bank is located at the corner of routes 82 and 199 in Pine Plains.

“When it’s near the holidays it’s twice as bad, Morrison said. “We’re fortunate enough to live in a small community. We’re all brothers and sisters and neighbors. We’re not begging for money, but anyone who wants to help out a family in need, that’s what we’ve set this up for.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
