Isabel V. Smith

EAST CANAAN — Isabel V. Smith, 81, of Old Turnpike Road, died  Nov. 5, 2009, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Sept. 2, 1928, in Winsted, she was the daughter of Marguerite (Gaylord) and Robert  VanVlack. She was educated in local schools and furthered her education at nursing schools in Connecticut.

She worked for many years as a nurse with the VNA and then later as a physiological social worker with the Housatonic Center for Mental Health.

She was predeceased by her husband, James A. Smith, in 1996.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her four children, Mark and his wife, Patricia, of East Canaan, Bruce and his wife, Angela, of Geneva, Fla., Dawn Robinson, and her husband, Ian, of Forest Dale, Mass., and Susan Pollard and her husband, of  Littleton, Mass.; and her brother, Bruce VanVlack of Florida.

A graveside service was held Nov.  9  at Hillside Cemetery in East Canaan. The Rev. Rosemary Dawson, pastor of the North Canaan Congregational Church, officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs.Smith’s memory to the Geer Caring Fund.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Area Dems are starting early to attack Congressional candidate George Logan. An intelligent, articulate and genuinely nice man, Logan served two terms in the Connecticut Senate and is now running for the 5 th District Congressional seat currently held by Jahana Hayes.

In 2000, Ms. Hayes narrowly defeated Mr. Logan despite outspending him by a margin of 3 to 1.

Last December at the U.N. Environmental Conference in Dubai,U.A.E., one positive accomplishment was a document signed after much argument by representatives of each of the 197 countries attending the conference. For the first time, the individual countries pledged to “transition” away from fossil fuels toward cleaner sources of energy. And for the first time a U.N. document used the term “climate change”.
