A satisfying season for Webutuck field hockey

WEBUTUCK — After a disappointing start, the Webutuck High School JV field hockey team finished strong, improving its record to 5-4-1 on the season despite a 2-0 loss to Kingston on Oct. 19 in the season closer.

Coach Kathleen Howard, who has now coached the team for the past three seasons, said that after several losses that started the season she had a sit-down talk with the girls.

“We talked about how to become a team, she said. “They kept on working on their drills and picking up motivation. And then we won five games straight. Something just clicked.

Howard said she’s been very happy with the work that her squad has put in this fall. The oldest girls on the team are in 10th grade, and the coach is hopeful that many will return for next season. Howard is considering having the team compete at the varsity level next year.

In addition to their efforts on the field, the Warriors also put in their time for worthy causes, most notably sporting pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness month and holding three different bake sales to raise funds.

“They really took it and ran with it, Howard said, reporting that the girls sold more than 150 T-shirts in just three days.

The possibility of a winter league is in the works, as is a modified program. While Howard complimented her entire team, she mentioned captain Sam Murphy as having stepped up her game big time, calling her performance “phenomenal this year.â€

Howard also complimented goalie Victoria Woodruff, who had never played the position before, for sticking with it and becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Next year will be about building the program up again, Howard said. “Hopefully we’re going to take it to the next level.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
