Fundraising spaghetti dinner Oct. 16 for Sid Ball

MILLERTON — A spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held Friday, Oct. 16, for Sid Ball Sr., who is recovering from major heart surgery six weeks ago.

Ball suffers from Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that weakens the connective tissue in the body.  In 1986,  he had surgery to replace his aortic artery. The aorta ruptured again a month and a half ago and he was taken in for surgery.

“I’m doing well, Ball said over the phone, adding that he feels more people should have themselves tested for Marfan’s and heart problems. He reported that his health has been improving.

The dinner, which is raising funds to financially assist Ball, is being held at American Legion Post 178 from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 to eat in or take out and can be purchased at the door, at Talk of the Towne Deli in Millerton’s Thompson Plaza or at McEnroe Organic Farm on Route 22, where Ball works.

“You see Sid at everybody else’s fundraisers, said Jim Milton, who has known the Ball family for years. “He comes out and supports us. I think it would be a nice thing to do the same.

Ball explained that his friends and family have been incredibly supportive of his situation.

“It really blows me away that so many can come out for me, he said. “It just goes to show about a small town like this. I want to thank all my friends and family. They know who they are.

Ball’s father, Jerry, and his son, Travis, are employees of The Lakeville Journal Co.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
