Firehouse fundraiser a laughing matter

AMENIA — The Amenia Fire Company and CSE are sponsoring Comedy Night this Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Immaculate Conception Church gymnasium.

Comedians Yamaneika Saunders and Billy Winn have appeared on HBO, NBC’s “Last Comic Standing, “Live with Regis and Kelly and VH1.

A roast beef dinner, with a chicken and vegetable lasagna alternative available upon request, will be served by Maplebrook School chef Vinnie Iannacone from 6 to 8 p.m. DJ Joey Stosfel will provide music throughout the evening.

Beer, wine, soda and water will be available; $10 will buy a customized souvenir cup and unlimited refills.

At 8 p.m. the comedy show will begin. Because of the adult nature of the comics, the suggested audience is 17 and older.

“It’s definitely an adult comedy show, explained Amenia Fire Captain Andy Murphy.

Following the show, which is expected to run an hour-and-a-half, DJ Joey will start up music again for dancing until 11 p.m.

“It was an idea that was brought up back in April, Murphy said. “Comedy shows have been successful in other places. We thought it would be something different than the usual dinners we offer.

Because of the preparations needed for dinner, buying tickets in advance is strongly recommended. Tickets are $25 each and are available from any member of the Amenia Fire Company, by calling the firehouse at 845-373-8467 or by calling event committee member Laurie Bates at 845-849-6021.

Proceeds from the show will go toward funding the various expenses associated with moving the department onto property it owns on Cascade Mountain Road. For the last few years, funding acquired through the district’s annual letter campaign has been collected for a new building fund. The move is still in the preliminary stages; site work and engineering will be one of the first steps for the department.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
