June G. (Ganung) Parsons

Lakeville — June G. (Ganung) Parsons, 88, of Old CNE Road, died Aug. 31, 2009, at Noble Horizons. She was the widow of John W. Parsons.  

June was born Jan. 25, 1921, in Sharon, the daughter of the late Eva Sadler (Dakin) and Francis LeRoy Ganung.

June owned and operated (along with her husband) Parson’s Appliance and Furniture Store in Millerton. She maintained the store for 25 years.  

June was also active in the community.  She served as a troop leader for both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts in Millerton; she was a volunteer at Sharon Hospital for 33 years, and she volunteered at OWLs Kitchen in Lakeville and with Women’s Support Services.  

June was a 43-year member of St. John’s Church in Salisbury and had served the church as the sacristan and as a member of the vestry.  She also was the Democratic registrar for the town of Salisbury for 10 years.

June is survived by Laurie (Berger) and Philip Gross of Pine Brook, N.J., and Samuel and Susan Berger of Washington, D.C.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Sept. 11, at 3p.m. at Irondale Cemetery in Millerton, the Rev. John Carter officiating. There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be sent to Salisbury Family Services or the Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association (the address for both is 30 Salmon Kill Road, Salisbury, CT 06068) or to the Bissell Fund, PO Box 1868, Lakeville, CT 06039.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
