Back-to-school is like a family reunion at Consolidated School

CORNWALL — It was the traditional first day of school at Cornwall Consolidated. The weather cooperated, with sunshine and an autumn-like chill in the air. New backpacks and sneakers were worn with excitement. Teachers greeted students, wearing Hawaiian leis. Many got impulsive hugs from students they taught last year.

The first day at Cornwall Consolidated always resembles a family reunion.

New Principal Robert Vaughan echoed that feeling in his words of greeting in the gymnasium.

“We have all the ingredients here for a great year, he told the 121 students. “You have a community that really cares about education, parents who care about sending you to school well-prepared for learning and a school staff that’s probably the best in Region One.

He told them they should continue to practice things like caring and respect toward one another.

“We will continue to focus on those things. Parents always tell me they know it’s important to learn to read and write, but what is more important is what you learn to be as a person. What really counts is how you treat others.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
