Raymond J. Reed Sr.

PINE PLAINS —  Raymond J. Reed Sr., 88, died Aug. 19, 2009, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.                                      

He was born on May 16, 1921, in Staten Island, N.Y., the son of the late Mae and Janos Reed.

He served with the United States Army.

On Feb. 11, 1946 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he married Lucille M. Reed. She predeceased him on Jan. 13, 2009.

He was an inspector for the Brooklyn Gas Company, and the mail and food courier for the Pine Plains Central School. He was past president of the PPSRP Union.

Mr. Reed was a member of the Pine Plains American Legion Post No. 426; a former member of the Pine Plains Lions Club; and town of Pine Plains Councilmen from 1982 to 1985 and again from 1992 to 1999.

He is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Pietromonaco of Staten Island; a son, John W. Reed of Rio, Wis.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Aug. 22 at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains, the Rev. Carol Miller officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
