Morton Silas Thompson Jr.

Wassaic — Morton Silas Thompson Jr., 73, a lifelong resident of Wassaic, died Aug. 3, 2009, at Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon. His wife, Pauline, survives at home.

Mr. Thompson was a factory worker at Tri-Wall Container Corporation in Wassaic for many years, retiring in 1993.

Born Nov. 1, 1935, in Sharon, he was the son of the late Nellie (Kinney) and Morton Silas Thompson Sr.  On Oct.22, 1972 in Amenia, he married Pauline Cooper.  He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Amenia.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, David Cooper of Wingdale, N.Y., Eric Thompson and his wife, Kimberly, of Chapin, S.C., and Morton Silas Thompson III of Wassaic; a brother, John Thompson Sr. of Canaan, N.Y.; a sister, Vivian Schneider of Wassaic; and three grandchildren, Joshua and Sarah Thompson and David Cooper.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Howard, Frank and Charles Thompson; and four sisters, Nellie Thompson, Emma Jillson, Ella Darrow and Harriet Schlander.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Hufcut Funeral Home, Dover Plains.  Graveside services and burial will follow at 11:45 a.m. at Flanders Cemetery in Kent.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
