Firefighters' 98th annual ball will be held June 13

KENT — The Kent Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 98th annual ball on Saturday, June 13, at 6 p.m.

This year, the ball will be held at the new firehouse at 28 Bridge St.

“We previously held it at the ice rink at Kent School,†organizer Anne Bisenius said. “I guess with this ball we want to stress the new location and give residents a chance to see the new firehouse and enjoy the new venue where people can have an evening out with dinner and dancing for a good cause.â€

The annual event is the department’s main fundraiser for the year and will have music performed by the swing band The Kent AlgoRhythms. A roast beef dinner will be prepared by former fire chief Bill Tobin and dancing will begin at 9 p.m with music by DJ Johnny the Music Man.

“The department wants to stress that we do have space limitations with this new firehouse and we want people to buy tickets and make reservations early so we have enough space for them,†Bisenius said. “There will be no rain dates. We have tents and we’ll use the garage bays of the firehouse if we have to.â€

Tickets are $30 per person. To reserve seats or tables, e-mail KVFDBALL@kentfire.org or call 860-927-3080.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
