BIKES ROAR IN FOR CHARITY

WINSTED — There were motorcycles just about as far as the eye could see Saturday outside of the Red Rooster Saloon on Main Street, where friends and family members of mike “mad dogâ€ Giordano held a benefit in his honor to raise money for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) research. Giordano, a former motorcycle shop owner, has been stricken with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, which attacks the body’s nervous system and gradually weakens the muscles. He was confined to a hospital bed at home Saturday. About 300 people were at the Red Rooster at the peak of the festivities, with hot dogs and hamburgers in constant rotation on outdoor grills and local bands performing under a patio tent. Bikers from throughout the Torrington-Winsted area purchased commemorative items as they paid tribute to Giordano, who was described as a well-known and well-liked friend.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
