Housy boys tennis racks up two wins

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School boys tennis team defeated Gilbert 5-0 at home Monday, May 18.

No. 1 singles: Cameron Samson defeated Greg Hicks, 8-2.

No. 2 singles: Jack Lenz defeated Jared Groth, 8-2.

No. 3 singles: forfeit

No. 1 doubles: Jerad Lauzier and Tyler Scarpa defeated Bryant Silverio and Nick Berger, 8-1.

No. 2 doubles: A.J. Opgenorth and Daven Patel defeated Shawn King and Jonah Hewitt, 8-0.

Housatonic finished its season on a positive note, beating a depleted Shepaug team 4-1 Thursday, May 21.

Cameron Samson avenged a loss earlier in the season to Lyle Nichols by winning 8-5. Cameron had previously lost 8-4 and improved his season record to 7-9 — pretty impressive for a senior playing tennis for the first time. Cameron beat three players in the second half of the season whom he had lost to early on. His all-around game improved immensly from the beginning of the year and he just missed the eight wins he would have needed to qualify individually for the state tournament.

No. 1 singles: Cameron Samson (H) defeated Lyle Nichols, 8-5.

No. 2 singles: Lynden Crumrine (S) defeated Jack Lenz, 8-0.

No. 3 singles: Matt Walker (H) defeated Tyler Stinson, 8-5.

No. 1 doubles: Jerad Lauzier and Tyler Scarpa (H) defeated Ben Scanlon and Ayden Crumrine, 8-2.

No. 2 doubles: Housatonic won by forfeit.

Although Housatonic did not qualify for states as a team, the regular No. 1 doubles team of Jerad Lauzier and Matt Walker finished the season at 7-4 and qualified to compete in the doubles tournament on June 3.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
