William M. Jurith

SHARON —William M. Jurith, 88, formerly of Sharon, died on May 21, 2009, in Freeport, N.Y.  He was the husband of the late Eileen M. Jurith of Sharon.

Mr. Jurith was born in West Cornwall on Oct. 28, 1920, and was the son of  Hazel (Nichols) and Martin Jurith.

He graduated from Cornwall Consolidated School and from the East New York Technical High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1939.

Mr. Jurith returned to Cornwall the next year and was employed at the American Brass Company in Torrington until he entered military service in 1942.

During World War II, Mr. Jurith served in the 771st Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion in Hawaii and Guam.  He was a first sergeant and received the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific American Theatre Medal, American Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Jurith’s military service was reactivated in March 1950 during the Korean War. He was assigned to the 185th Signal Corps in Camp Polk, La. He was discharged from military service in April 1953.

 In 1948 he began a 34-year career with the Consolidated Edison Company of New York and retired as an administrative systems operator. He built a home in Sharon in 1976 on property that once belonged to his grandparents, Carolyn and William Nichols.  He retired to this home in 1982.

Mr. Jurith was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an active member of St. Bridget Church in Cornwall Bridge and for his faith and service was awarded the St. Joseph Medal by Archbishop Daniel Cronin of the Archdiocese of Hartford in 2003.

He his survived by his son, Edward H. Jurith of Washington, D.C., and daughter-in-law Kathleen M. Healy; his daughter, Carolyn Clarke of Freeport and son-in-law Anthony J. Clarke; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his son Robert, who died in 2000.

A wake will be held May 29 at 9 a.m. at St. Bridget Church and was followed by a Mass of Christian burial. Interment was in the St. Bridget churchyard. Arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
