Richard Miller ‘Tookie’ Mugler Jr.

MILLERTON —Richard Miller “Tookie†Mugler Jr., 71, of State Highway 30, Perth, N.Y., died suddenly on May 18, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital.  

Born in Millerton, he was the son of the late Richard M. Mugler Sr. and Doris Clark Grau.

Richard moved upstate to Perth 20 years ago.  He was employed by New York state as a driver until his retirement.  

He served honorably with the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.

An avid collector, he enjoyed going to auctions and collecting coins and paperweights. He loved to hunt and fish and was loved by everyone who knew him. He will be sadly missed.

Survivors include his children, Deborah Mugler of Pittsfield, Mass., and Richard M. Mugler III of Seattle, Wash.; the mother of his children, Virginia Mugler of West Point, Va.; two sisters, Betty Zitz and her husband, Peter, of Rhinebeck and Barbara Rueger of Huntington, W.Va.; his longtime companion, Judy Barto of Perth, and her family; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A legacy candle ceremony and celebration of life were held May 23 at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home in Amsterdam, N.Y. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Copake.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
