A few good runners wanted for Saturday's race

SHARON — This Saturday, May 2, the 24th annual Sharon Classic Road Race will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The 5-mile race and family festival is a benefit for the Sharon Day Care, a nonprofit center that operates out of Sharon Center School. The proceeds help to pay tuition for local families and to maintain the facility.

The race route is similar in shape to a lollipop and begins and ends at the town Green, meandering through the whole town. A family festival, including children’s activities and a kid’s fun run, is also part of the race festivities.

At press time, there were 50 people preregistered for the race. Organizers said they hope more runners will turn out on race day.

This year, for the first time in race history, the top male and female contestants will each receive a $250 prize.

The family fun festival begins at 9 a.m. and the children’s fun run begins at 9:30 a.m. A “Not-Quite-A-Mile†race begins at 9:45 a.m. and the road race begins at 10:15 a.m.

Registration for the race is $20, or $25 on race day. Registration for the children’s fun run and “Not-Quite-A-Mile†race is $5.

For more information about the race, call Karen Dignacco at 860-364-0407 or 860-364-0407. To register for the race online, visit sharondaycare.org.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
