Homeowners improving their homes in slowed Connecticut economy

NORTH CANAAN — You deserve a break today. That used to be the motto of a well-known chain (which will remain unnamed) but now it is, at least in practice, the motto of S. J. Masters, the tile and stone dealer in the center of town.

“Times are really, really hard, said Danielle Orth, Masters’ fabrication supervisor. “We don’t know what’s going to happen. We are watching stores around us close. We all need to pull together to get through this.

That said, Orth and the staff are busy sorting through inventory in their West Main Street warehouse and putting together an assortment of tiles, tile motifs, glass tiles, hand-painted theme tiles, mosaic murals (some already grouted), white Carrera marble, granite and stone slabs, pre-cut vanity and countertops, and lots more for a giant warehouse sale.

Some of the slabs are so big, they had to be lined up on end using a forklift. Those pieces stretch across a back parking lot.

Discounts are up to 60 percent.

Carol Mastroianni, who owns the company with her husband, Steve, said they decided to hold their annual clearance sale a little earlier this year.

“Maybe some businesses are already doing this. I hope so, and I hope more will follow suit. The only way we are going to get through this is together.

There will be plenty of employees on hand during the sale, to offer advice about installation and unique ways to combine smaller lots.

“You can really save that way, and you’ll end up with a one-of-a-kind floor. Even with the clearance sale, we will walk our customers through the whole process, Mastroianni said.

The sale begins May 2 and runs through May 16. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Regular stock items will also be on sale. Cash sales will earn an extra 5 percent discount.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
