Boys tennis falls to Lewis Mills, then defeats Thomaston

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic boys tennis team started its season Thursday, April 9, with a 5-0 loss to Lewis Mills.

Losing  six out of seven varsity players from last year’s squad makes us very inexperienced. Our only returning varsity player is Jerad Lauzier, our senior captain who is playing his third varsity season.  Cameron Samson is a first-year player as a senior and won the No. 1 singles spot, so that was a nice addition to the team. As he gains experience, he’ll do fine at that position.

Jerad will play No. 1 doubles with sophomore Matt Walker, who improved the most of any of our freshmen last year.  Senior Daven Patel will anchor the No. 2 doubles position with A.J. Opgenorth and Conor McCarthy, both juniors, splitting some time with him.

Our other singles players are senior Jack Lenz and freshman Tyler Scarpa.  Jack is in this third year and has played some varsity matches.  Tyler comes in as a freshman with a lot of athleticism and a good foundation of strokes.

Tripp said Litchfield and Nonnewaug are the teams to beat but that Lewis Mills is a tough opponent.

The results for the Lewis Mills match:

No. 1 singles: Evan Sahlman (LM) defeated Cameron Samson (H), 8-1.

No. 2 singles: Matt Marzicola (LM) defeated Matt Walker (H), 8-1.

No. 3 singles: Ryan Surveski (LM) defeated Tyler Scarpa (H), 8-0.

No. 1 doubles: Luis Subriana and Cal Simko (LM) defeated Jerad Lauzier and Daven Patel (H), 8-2.

No. 2 doubles:  Bryce Rudiak and Steve Soliani (LM) defeated A.J. Opgenorth and Conor McCarthy (H), 8-0.

On Monday, April 13, Housatonic (1-1) defeated Thomaston (0-3) 3-2 at Thomaston. The match of the day was at No. 2 doubles. The team match was tied 2-2 as they began and it was back-and-forth the whole match. There were some crazy points with a lot of quick action at net. Both teams fought hard and played well, but Housy was a little more consistent at the end and pulled away for an 8-5 win to clinch the team’s first win of the season.

No. 1 singles: Erik Gundersen (T) defeated Cameron Samson 8-4.

No. 2 singles: Jack Lenz (H) defeated Dan DiFiore 8-4.

No. 3 singles: Nick Ashmore (T) defeated Tyler Scarpa 8-0.

No. 1 doubles: Jerad Lauzier and Matt Walker (H) defeated Joe Palladino and Chad Pierce 8-5.

No.  2 doubles:  Daven Patel (H) and A.J. Opgenorth (H) defeated Guximtor Islami and Pat Newman 8-5.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
