Marian R. Thurston

LAKEVILLE — Marian R. Thurston died peacefully with family by her side on April 7, 2009. She was the widow of Robert J. Thurston, to whom she was married for 47 years.

She was born in Boston on April 10, 1929, to Martha (Kelley) and Matthew E. Cardoza. She was raised in Boston and Winthrop, Mass., and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1947 before moving to Lakeville.

Marian was a waitress at several local inns in the area prior to working at Illinois Toolworks in Lakeville; she retired from there after 22 years of service.

Marian enjoyed bingo, crossword puzzles and watching sports but most of all enjoyed spending time with her family.  

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Lakeville.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Matthew Cardoza of Kingston, Mass.

The beloved mother of four children, Marian is survived by Ann Thurston of Lakeville, Jane Shufelt of Millerton, Robert Thurston Jr. and his wife, Esther, of Chester, Va., and William Thurston and his wife, Kathy, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Kenneth, Christina, Nicole, Melissa, Robert, Vanessa and Kelly; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; her brother, Robert “Buddy� Cardoza of Peoria, Ariz.; and her sister-in-law, Sandra Thurston of Manchester, Conn.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.  A service was held at St. Mary’s Church in Lakeville on April 11.

Memorial donations may be made  to the Noble Horizons Village Fund, 17 Cobble Road, Salisbury, CT 06068; or the Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association, Salmon Kill Road, Salisbury, CT 06068.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
