Colebrook schools seek slight increase

COLEBROOK — The Colebrook Board of Education has proposed a slight budget increase for the 2009-10 fiscal year, despite a request from the town’s Board of Finance for a zero-percent increase. While the original budget called for a 4.25-percent increase over the 2008-09 budget, a reduction at the April 1 Board of Education meeting decreased the proposal by a small margin at the request of the Board of Finance. The current budget equals $1,734,634, a 2.7-percent increase. It is approximately $45,000 higher than last year’s budget.

“[The education board] communicated to the Board of Finance that any further reduction would seriously decrease the quality of the educational program, said Colebrook Superintendent James Chittum, who noted that several options are on the table, all relating to staff or salary reductions.

“I had informal meetings with the teacher’s association and asked them to consider re-opening their contract to consider salary concessions. At the April 1 meeting, the president of the teacher’s association communicated to the board that at this time they could not open their contract, said Chittum. The contract in effect was passed last year and will reopen in 2011.

Colebrook Consolidated School currently employees nine full-time teachers, four part-time teachers, six paraprofessionals, a principal and a part-time superintendent. Four additional salaried positions, including an administrative assistant and a nurse, are also on the books.

“If the Board of Finance does bring to the town a zero-percent increase in the Board of Education budget, the Board of Education will have to make some decisions on what they will do to meet that $45,000 reduction, said Chittum. “What’s important now is to know what the actual figure is and the board will decide what to do. Nothing is certain now and there are no decisions on the part of the board on how they will deal with that eventuality.

The Board of Finance was scheduled to meet Wednesday, April 8, and again Wednesday, April 15. The town budget hearing is scheduled for May 4.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
