Rev. Berberick wins Ice Watch

KENT — The Rev. Thomas Berberick of the Sacred Heart Church in Kent is the 2009 winner of the Kent Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Ice Watch competition. Event organizers determined the ice began to break on the Housatonic River on Feb. 23 at 10:58 a.m.

Berberick guessed that the ice would break on Feb. 23 at 11:10 a.m., making his entry the closest to the actual time.

Participants in the contest pay $2 for a chance to guess what time and date the ice in the river will start to break. A special tripod was placed on the river on Feb. 21 at midnight; it recorded the exact time when the ice began to move around on the river.

The total amount raised from entries is $1,808, which will now be split between the fire department and Berberick.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
