When Leon Botstein conducts the first downbeat of Mascagni’s “Iris” at the Bard SummerScape festival on July 22, it will usher in a rare hearing for this neglected opera and an even rarer staging. Not seen at the Met in more than 85 years, “Iris” is the kind of overlooked gem that Bard has come to specialize in.
