Wrestlers meet in crosstown practice

WINSTED — Grapplers from Gilbert and Northwestern met Wednesday, Feb. 4, for a crosstown practice and scrimmage. Coaches from both schools combined efforts in order to give their team some additional experience and time on the mat.

When a scrimmage against Simsbury was cancelled due to weather, Gilbert head coach Doug Smith approached Gilbert Athletic Director Mike Gamari to arrange a friendly practice and scrimmage.

“It allows you to try some combinations and wrestlers you wouldn’t normally get to, said Smith.

Wrestlers from the two schools met in improvised skirmishes and wrestling drills, while their coaches observed, directed and even joined in the action themselves.

Northwestern Coach Chris Marx acknowledged the Highlander’s struggles to this point.

“It has been an uphill battle all season, Marx said. Although he doesn’t expect a sudden turnaround this season, he said the next few years of rebuilding and training will make room for the team to improve.

As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
