Legendary piano man plays for love and the Lions Club

KENT — Dolph Traymon, a pianist who has played for musical legends including Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee and Joel Grey, will tickle the ivories in a rare benefit performance  on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m. at Kent Center School.

Traymon, co-owner of the Fife ‘n’ Drum restaurant and gift shop on Main Street, is performing for several community charities, including the Kent Lions Club, the Kent Community Fund and the Kent Memorial Library.

“You can walk into Fife ‘n’ Drum when he’s playing and tell him to play anything and he’ll play it, Selectman and Lion’s Club member Bruce Adams said about Traymon. “He can play anything from jazz to pop. We had a Lions Club meeting a while back at Fife ‘n’ Drum and Dolph liked what he saw, so now he’s a charter member.

Lions Club President Mark Hamilton said the club is stepping up its fundraising efforts in the face of a declining economy.

“There is just so much more need out there in the community, Hamilton said. “It’s a double-edged sword because with more need, fundraising is a major challenge. But we see an opportunity like working with Dolph as a fantastic value. We appreciate the generosity of Kent Center School for making the auditorium available.

Traymon, 89, said he is more than ready for the concert.

“I’m going to do the best I can to please the audience, he said. “I think I might play some Beethoven, some Chopin, things like that. Maybe some popular show tunes as well. I’m doing this because you gotta give back to the community.

Adams said he hopes people will come out to the performance.

“We have 400 seats and we want to fill them all, Adams said. “He’s a wonderful piano player.

Traymon, a seasoned veteran, said he hasn’t got any pre-show jitters.

“You can judge me when you hear me,â€ Traymon said. “If you don’t like my playing, you can throw grapefruits at me. Having a great time in music is what kept me alive. If I had to do it all over again, I would not change a thing. Most people can’t say that.â€

“An Afternoon with Dolph Traymon will be held in the Mattison Auditorium at Kent Center School on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Kent Memorial Library. For more information, call the library at 860-927-3761.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
