New slate for Tri-State Chamber

SHARON — The Tri-State Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Sharon Hospital cafeteria, a spot well-known in the region for its reasonably priced yet healthy menu. New President William Crow moderated the annual meeting for the first time, speaking of a new spirit of a new chamber.

“We want to do a better job of earning the dues our members pay,†Crow said.

He gave the floor to Sharon Hospital CEO Charlie Therrien, who welcomed all to the annual meeting and spoke of the challenges facing those in the health-care industry, and specifically Sharon Hospital, in the year ahead. He said that while the general public perception may be that the health-care industry is immune to the economic crisis since people always need health care, that is not the case. Sharon Hospital is already, Therrien said, noting there are patients who no longer take advantage of preventative care as frequently, and putting off maintenance care, which can lead to a higher occurrence of more serious, and costly, health issues down the line.

Joann M. Ryan, president and CEO of Northwest Connecticut’s Chamber, spoke on the beneficial affiliation of her organization with the Tri-State Chamber. She highlighted a program that brought a group of teachers to Sharon Hospital as part of a continuing education course for a tour by Therrien, which Ryan described as “fantastic, in that we saw every department in the hospital and it was all explained so well by Charlie.†She presented a year in review brochure, enumerating the range of events, programs and coalitions that both chambers benefited from during 2008.

The meeting was punctuated by a musical revue presented by TriArts’ Michael Berkeley, Patricia Best and Lori Belter. Their presentation of selections from “The Music Man†was just a taste of things to come in the TriArts 2009 season. TriArts Executive Director Alice Bemand and Artistic Director Michael Berkeley announced the season’s offerings, which will begin with a children’s revue, then go to productions of “The Music Man,†“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,†and Disney’s “High School Musical 2.†Auditions for the shows begin on Jan. 30. The new slate of officers for the Tri-State Chamber was voted on by the attending members and approved for 2009. They are:

Vice President: Maria Jannace of Lime Rock Park, Lakeville

Treasurer: Susan Dickinson of Litchfield Bancorp, Lakeville

Secretary: Martha Reynolds of Simmons Way Village Inn, Millerton

In addition, board members for 2009 are: D. Jane Pinckney, Mona Staaf-Hoffman, Catherine Fenn, Joseph Loverro, Andrew Gates, Janet Manko, Tim Hitchcock and William Willis.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
