Amy (Ketner) Adams

MILLERTON — Amy (Ketner) Adams, 93, died Jan. 5, 2009.

She was born in Reading, Pa., March 28, 1915. Amy was always ahead of her time. She graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1937, and spent a full and fruitful career as a pharmacist. After many years as the hospital pharmacist at Community General Hospital in Reading, she worked for several more years at the Kutztown Pharmacy, finally retiring in her early 80s.

Amy was an avid traveler and a history buff and often combined these interests by traveling with the Berks County Historical Society as well as privately with friends, visiting Turkey and Australia after her 80th birthday. A member of the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Reading as well as the Reading Library, she attended its lecture series for many years.

Ill health and advancing age curbed her independence and three years ago she came to live in Millerton with her niece and only relative, Jane (Adams) Levi, and Jane’s husband, Lloyd. While living here, she was warmly welcomed as a part of the Smithfield Church Congregation and endeared herself to friends and caregivers with her gentle but determined nature.

She is survived by the Levis and their son, David Scott Levi, and daughter, Lisa Adams Levi.

Amy was predeceased by her brother, W. Scott Adams, her only sibling.

Funeral services will be held at Smithfield Church in Smithfield, N.Y., Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. Amy’s family will receive guests immediately following the funeral in the Smithfield Church Hall.

Arrangements are under the care of the Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
