Yellowjackets football loses third in a row, 38-14

WINSTED — The Gilbert-Northwestern Yellowjackets football team was unable to snap their losing streak at home Saturday, Nov. 22, against the Canton Warriors. Canton has struggled this year, but showed their thirst for late-season victories, defeating the Yellowjackets 38-14.

Canton was quick to strike, using a reliable rush game to score the game’s first touchdown with a 14-yard run by Luke Talbot. Canton set up for the conversion, but was unable to add the extra points and took the lead, 6-0, early in the first with signs of steady snowfall making its way to Van Why Field.

Gilbert-Northwestern, appearing deflated by the early Canton touchdown, took the field to counter but found themselves pushed to their goal line by penalties, and then fumbled possession back to Canton.

Talbot quickly marked his second touchdown run of the game on a 15-yard rush to the outside. Canton set up for the conversion and was able to add an additional two on a run by the Warriors’ Nick Grabowski, extending the lead to 14-0.

Gilbert-Northwestern took possession but Canton forced another fumble and the Warriors’ Nate Scott ran it in for another rapid touchdown. The Warriors lined up for the extra point but the kick was no good. Canton found themselves ahead 20-0, and with all the momentum on their side in the first.

The Yellowjackets offense took the field, but continual penalties derailed any chance of Gilbert-Northwestern gaining some offensive liveliness.

Deep in the Yellowjackets’ end, the Warriors seemed primed to build upon their lead until Gilbert-Northwestern’s Jay Farkas forced a fumble and regained possession for the Yellowjackets near their own 10-yard line.

The first ended with Canton ahead 20-0 and Gilbert-Northwestern with possession and beginning to show some offensive force.

Canton quickly flattened Gilbert-Northwestern’s brief flicker of momentum by forcing another fumble early in the second and gaining possession once more. Canton went back to running the ball along the outside and dug in around Gilbert-Northwestern’s goal line to battle one in for another touchdown. The Yellowjackets’ defense struggled to keep the Warriors from adding to their lead, but Canton’s Mike Frazier found a way through for another Canton touchdown. The Warriors set up for the conversion to put the game further out of reach and Grabowski successfully carried it in to bring the score to Canton 28, Gilbert-Northwestern 0.

Things were looking very grim for the Yellowjackets, but Gilbert-Northwestern’s Farkas infused the crowd and his team with incredible energy as he carried the kickoff return 70 yards for the Yellowjackets’ first touchdown of the game. The Gilbert-Northwestern offense set up for the conversion and Farkas successfully tallied the additional two points, bringing the score to 28-8.

Throughout the second, Gilbert-Northwestern continued to find themselves in penalty trouble. Canton managed to add to their lead with only seconds left before the half. The Warriors’ Jeff Nasson put a 27-yard kick through the uprights, extending Canton’s lead to 31-8.

Canton came out of the half and received the kick. Gilbert-Northwestern’s defense looked good and pushed the Warriors into a fourth and long situation. Canton, already with a commanding lead, decided to go for it, but the Yellowjackets’ senior captain Sol Lovetere halted any attempt to gain the first down with a colossal sack, gaining possession on downs.

Gilbert-Northwestern did not waste a moment, attacking with a 40-yard rush by Farkas for the Yellowjackets’ second touchdown of the game. Gilbert-Northwestern attempted the conversion but came up short, bringing the score to 31-14.

The third ended with neither team’s offense able to get off the ground, sending the game into the fourth with a score of 31-14.

Canton started the fourth by putting together some fantastic offense. Gilbert-Northwestern’s defense countered and pushed the Warriors into a fourth and long situation after another great sack by the Yellowjackets’ Kyle Jones and Bobby Lippincott.

Canton finished out their great game by adding another touchdown on a 68-yard run by Talbot. The Warriors’ Jeff Nasson put up the extra point and Canton brought the lead to 38-14 with little time in the fourth.

Gilbert-Northwestern was unable to add another touchdown to their score before the finish and took the loss at home with a final score of Canton 38, Gilbert-Northwestern 14.

Gilbert-Northwestern’s Jay Farkas ran in all of the Yellowjackets’ points. Gilbert-Northwestern’s record stands at 4-6. They next play Housatonic-Wamogo on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m. in Falls Village for the 24th annual Berkshire Bowl.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
