Florence (Damon) Marcou

CORNWALL BRIDGE — Florence (Damon) Marcou, 104, of Enfield, passed away Nov. 15, 2008, at Blair Manor.

Born Feb. 1, 1904, in Sutton, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Aurilla (DeParo) and Peter Damon.

Before moving to Enfield 44 years ago, she resided in and raised her children in Cornwall Bridge.

She was a dedicated communicant of Holy Family Parish since its founding. She was a member of the Women’s Guild. She loved playing bingo every Wednesday night at the parish.

Florence worked for several years at Dr. Goldberg’s Eye Care. She also taught knitting in the Enfield Schools. During World War II, she made mattresses for the soldiers.

She was a Gold Star Mother as a result of  the death of her son, Reynold, during the invasion of Normandy. She and her family cherished his memory and visited the site of the invasion in 1993, which was a memorable time.

She was a member of the Grange for several years.

She cherished four generations of grandchildren, expressing her love through knitting them mittens and socks, as well as ensuring she spent time with each one.

She is survived by four children: Blanche McWilliams of Moodus, Conn., Frank Marcou and his wife, Linda, of Amenia, Pearl DeBarge of Somers, and Lucinda Slattery and her husband,  Richard, of Burlington; a brother, Clifton Damon and his wife, Anita, of Delmar, N.Y.; and four generations of grandchildren, which exceed 100 members.

She was predeceased by her husband, Perley Marcou, on Aug. 31, 1938; four children, Reynold Marcou, Roland Marcou, Pauline Baird and Mary Denmark; and nine brothers and three sisters.

Family and friends will gather on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 9 a.m. at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapel for a procession to Holy Family Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow at St. Bridget Cemetery in Cornwall Bridge.
