Pink's NFL Picks 10-31-08

This week’s record, 9-5; for the season, 74-42.

Pick of the week, 1-0; for the season, 6-2.

Last week marked another mediocre performance for me, but I’m happy my Pick of the Week came in.

Actually, 9-5 isn’t bad, but I should have done better.

Believe it or not, we are now halfway through the season and that means each and every game becomes more important for those teams that have playoff aspirations, which, by the way, are many.

The Giants picked up a big win and now host the Cowboys in what should be a defining win for the G-Men.

I’m going to surprise you with my Pick of the Week by taking an underdog, so let’s get on with it.

Sunday, Nov. 2

Detroit at Chicago

— The only point of interest in this game is the performance of former UConn QB Dan Orlovsky. I’ll be rooting for him.

I hope the Lions will make it interesting, but it’s hard to imagine them beating the Bears at home. Chicago wins, 24-13.

Houston at Minnesota

— Well, here it is. I know the Texans are on the road and the Vikings are coming off a bye week, but I’ll go with momentum anytime and I believe Houston has it. It may be easier than I think, but I like the Texans for my Pick of the Week, 19-17.

Green Bay at Tennessee

— The Packers are coming off a bye week, while the Titans picked up a big win over the Colts on Monday night. A well-rested Packer team could prove to be tough, but I still say the Titans are for real. I like Tennessee, 31-17.

New York Jets at Buffalo

— I’m not very excited about Brett and the Jets and I still think the Bills are good, especially at home. I see Buffalo rebounding nicely from their loss to the improving Dolphins to win this one, 27-17.

Arizona at St. Louis

— With the way the Rams have been playing all of a sudden, this game gets interesting. Haslet has done a nice job with St. Louis, but I’m not sure they can hold off the Cards. I look for Curt Warner to have a big day against his former team as the Cards win, 31-23.

Baltimore at Cleveland

— The Browns are by no means out of the division race and a victory here over the Ravens would put them in the thick of things. I see Cleveland winning by a score of 27-20.

Tampa Bay at Kansas City

— The Chiefs are showing signs of improving from horrendous to horrible, but the Bucs defense should be enough to keep Kansas City in check. I’ll go with Tampa Bay, 20-13.

Jacksonville at Cincinnati

— The Jags are rapidly becoming a mystery team, while the Bengals bungle. Jacksonville must now look at a wild card berth to make the playoffs and can’t afford to loss a game like this. I like the Jags, 24-21.

Miami at Denver

— Are the Dolphins for real? We should find out this week as they travel to Colorado to face the well-rested Broncos. Denver can score, but they give up a ton of points and should be the pick in this game. I’ve got a hunch the Dolphins score late to win, 27-24.

Dallas at N.Y. Giants

— Both teams won ugly this past week, but the difference was the Giants were on the road. The Giants have problems, but Dallas has bigger problems. I like the G-Men in this one, 20-16.

Atlanta at Oakland

— Another road game for the Falcons, while the Raiders try to regroup after getting roughed up by the Ravens. I’m still pulling for the Falcons and Matt Ryan, so I’ll take Atlanta, 24-19.

Philadelphia at Seattle

— Can you believe the Seahawks won a game on the road? I can’t. With that said, the Eagles have Westbrook back and that makes them much tougher. I like the Eagles, 27-21.

New England at Indianapolis

— Over the past few years, this has been one of the most anticipated games on the schedule. However, the Colts are struggling while the Patriots appear to be settled in with backup quarterback Cassel. It’s hard to imagine the Colts losing three in a row, but it could happen. I’ll still stick with the Colts, 30-23.

Monday, Nov. 3

Pittsburgh at Washington

— The Steelers are definitely hurting and Washington needs a win to stay on or near the top of the division or wild card race. What does that mean? Nothing. I still like Pittsburgh, 23-17.

Bunny Williams's
‘Life in the Garden’
Rizzoli

In 1979, interior decorator Bunny Williams and her husband, antiques dealer John Rosselli, had a fateful meeting with a poorly cared for — in Williams’s words, “unspoiled” — 18th-century white clapboard home.

“I am not sure if I believe in destiny, but I do know that after years of looking for a house, my palms began to perspire when I turned onto a tree-lined driveway in a small New England village,” Williams wrote in her 2005 book, “An Affair with a House.” The Federal manor high on a hill, along with several later additions that included a converted carriage shed and an 1840-built barn, were constructed on what had been the homestead property of Falls Village’s Brewster family, descendants of Mayflower passenger William Brewster, an English Separatist and Protestant leader in Plymouth Colony.

The Creators: Sitting down with Garet Wierdsma

Garet&Co dancers

Jennifer Almquist

On Saturday, March 9, the people of Norfolk, Connecticut, enjoyed a dance performance by northern Connecticut-based Garet&Co, in Battell Chapel, titled INTERIOR, consisting of four pieces: “Forgive Her, Hera,” “Something We Share,” “bodieshatewomen,” and “I kinda wish the apocalypse would just happen already.”

At the sold-out show in the round, the dancers, whose strength, grace and athleticism filled the hall with startling passion, wove their movements within the intimate space to the rhythms of contemporary music. Wierdsma choreographed each piece and curated the music. The track she created for “Something We Share” eerily contained vintage soundtracks from life guidance recordings for the perfect woman of the ‘50s. The effect, with three dancers in satin slips posing before imaginary mirrors, was feminist in its message and left the viewer full of vicarious angst.

Kevin McEneaney

Judith O’Hara Balfe

On meeting Kevin McEneaney, one is almost immediately aware of three things; he’s reserved, he’s highly intelligent and he has a good sense of humor.

McEneaney is the wit and wisdom behind The Millbrook Independent, a blog that evolved from the print version of that publication. It's a wealth of information about music venues in this part of Dutchess County interspersed with poetry, art reviews, articles on holidays and other items, and a smattering of science.
