Affordable eats at What's Cooking in North Canaan

NORTH CANAAN — One of the town’s prime downtown locations reopened last week as a café.

It’s called What’s Cooking, and its owners promise a fresh and simple menu that is affordable and full of favorite foods.

“I want it to be like going to your mom’s for dinner. We’re going back to basics,� said Pat Elias, owner and operator of the eatery that took over the former Phoenix Café spot on Main Street.

The café is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner with fare such as fresh-baked muffins, pot roast, thick sandwiches. Meals are served in a basket, reminiscent of a simpler time, with generous portions and fixings and fries included. There are early-bird specials.

The atmosphere is homey and warm. Elias plans to “give inâ€� to a demand for Wi-Fi and television, which will be tuned in to news — but turned down low enough so it doesn’t become the focus of the room. He envisions a place  that’s ideal for working lunches as well as for long, leisurely dinners with friends. The walls will be reserved for local artists to display their work.

“I’m doing a limited daily menu. That way, we can offer really fresh food and keep our prices down. Families will be able to afford to eat here, and get a good, home-style meal. We roast our own meats, such as turkey and pulled pork. It is like eating in your own dining room, without the work.�

Elias, who brings years of restaurant experience with him, has hired North Canaan resident Tony Stumbaugh as his cook. His wife, Debbie, will help from time to time, but will remain mostly involved with the business she is well known for, the Country Quilt Llama Farm in Winsted. The couple lives in Cornwall Bridge.

What’s Cooking is open Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
