Fall Foliage Fest returns in October

WINSTED — The Laurel City’s annual Fall Foliage Festival will return to Main Street Saturday, Oct. 4, with nearly 100 vendors, local shops and community organizations participating.

Billed as a family-style event with food, refreshments, games and live music, this year’s festival will be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Frontier Days, a week-long series of events designed to rebuild the Winsted community in August of 1958, three years after the Great Flood of 1955.

“We’ve got quite a few vendors who have come back this year, so it’s coming together very well, said Friends of Main Street Executive Director Helen Bunnell. “We’re encouraging local businesses to put signs out on the street and set up booths, which they can do for free.

Friends of Main Street charges out-of-town vendors a fee for booth space in the Fall Foliage Festival but local businesses are admitted free of charge. Bunnell said many local merchants see increased foot traffic during the festival and restaurants do a particularly good business outside, as nearly 10,000 people walk through town throughout the day. Dozens of Friends of Main Street volunteers help organize and set up the festival.

Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Fall Foliage Festival takes place on the north side of Main Street between Case Avenue and Union Street, with street vendors lining the road. Children’s bounce houses, musicians, face painting, merchants and food booths stretch along the downtown thoroughfare. Jewelry, clothing, arts and crafts are among the items for sale.

When visitors reach Union Street, they will see the beginning of the annual Elks Antique and Classic Car Show, an event that has coincided with the Fall Foliage Festival for several years. The auto show draws enthusiasts from across Connecticut and beyond to show off their muscle cars, classic Corvettes and Mustangs, antique cars, hot rods, sports cars and motorcycles.

The Elks also run a food booth near the corner of Main and Union streets, with breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers, sausage, soda and fried dough. Cars in the auto show will park west of Union Street along Route 44.

“It’s a major community effort and it’s fun for everyone, Bunnell said. “The only thing we always hope for is good weather.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
