State agency finds fuel leak at Cornwall Bridge filling station

CORNWALL — New information from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) indicates a gasoline leak did occur at the Citgo gas station in Cornwall Bridge.

A discrepancy in gasoline inventory records was originally reported by the DEP. Inventory reconciliation is used primarily to determine leaks. Such was the case, with station owner Drake Petroleum reporting about three weeks ago a "release from the system," according to Peter Zack, assistant director of the Emergency Response and Spill Prevention Division of the state agency.

"The inventory discrepancy was accounted for with about 200 gallons of gasoline that leaked into a secondary containment system," Zack said.

He explained the system includes a double-walled structure to trap leaks and drain them into a sump.

"The system worked the way it was supposed to. Monitoring wells around the tanks were checked and there was no contamination of the environment. The gas station was shut down voluntarily and at this point they are evaluating why it occurred."

Gary Mikutel, a regional manager for Drake Petroleum, told The Journal last week he was not aware of any issues at the Cornwall Bridge Citgo and Xtramart store.

He said new pumps and lines were going to be installed to replace aging equipment. The work is expected to be completed by Labor Day weekend. He could not explain why yellow caution tape had been used to cordon off the pumps well before work was to begin.

The DEP referred The Journal to Cathy Cox, also of Drake Petroleum. When reached, Cox passed along the referral to Ray Leather, with Drake’s parent company, Warren Equities.

No further information was made available.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
