WINSTED — Karate was on display at Northwestern Connecticut Community College on Wednesday, Aug. 6, as part of the Foundation In-School Youth Program. Now in its third year, the program specializes in helping students with robotics and also providing lessons for those interested in karate.

The program consists of a five-week session and runs for 20-hours per week. Lunch is provided and students who help run the programs earn hourly pay. The Northwest Regional Workforce Development Board funds the program, in addition with other state and federal funds.

This summer, the robotics program has taken off. Students are involved in building a robot, which will help them understand computer programming. After building the robot, they will also design an obstacle course for the robots, which helps them learn to use optical sensors. Their program concluded Aug. 7 with an open demonstration of robotics.

Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
