Art by women of women at iO Gallery

CORNWALL — “Girls, Girls, Girls.†Are you thinking the Elvis film from 1962, or are the Motley Crüe lyrics now playing in your head?

For an entirely different perspective, head to the iO Gallery during the coming weeks for a remarkable exhibit of women, by women, from unexpected perspectives.

An opening reception will be held June 14, 5 to 7 p.m. The show runs through July 20.

Gallery owner Kelly Futerer said the idea for a show exclusively of women who paint women was an easy concept. She calls it a celebration of the female form in art from a modern woman’s point of view. She put the word out and was amazed by the number and scope of artists who responded.

“There is everything from anime to ‘My Little Pony’-type illustrations to a Nancy Drew illustrator to  pin-ups. Jurie Ueda, a young girl from Japan, sent amazing watercolors.â€

Pin-up artist Olivia, known for her renderings of famous women, will be showing in Connecticut for the first time.

“She hasn’t shown on the East Coast for seven years,†Futerer said. “She has five hardcover books out on her pin-up art, and she’s even given me a couple of pieces from her private collection.â€

Local artists Erica Prud’homme, Danielle Mailer and Anique Taylor are exhibiting somewhat lesser known aspects of their careers. Futerer promises surprises there.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
