Leslie Rita (Gibbs) Conklin

FALLS VILLAGE — Leslie Rita (Gibbs) Conklin, 72, died on June 2, 2008, at her winter home in Bradenton, Fla. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Harley Jerome Conklin.

She was born Aug. 31,1935, in New Haven, Conn., the daughter of Kathryn G. (King) and Gordon L. Gibbs.

Mrs. Conklin will be remembered by her family and friends for setting a wonderful example as a smart and active no-nonsense woman who had the courage of her convictions and a sharp wit, as a devoted daughter, a sassy sister, a beloved and loyal wife, a caring friend and a dedicated mom.

Mrs. Conklin studied to be a teacher but left her career to marry her high-school sweetheart. She was ever the teacher — because of her, we know how to use left-handed scissors, the importance of thank-you notes, to use the power of our vote in a democratic government, that we should eat our vegetables and sit up straight, to love to read and learn, to help others and to believe in God.

She put her needs behind those of her family. We know she loved us. We take comfort in the fact that she is with our Heavenly Father and our family and friends who have gone before us.

She is survived by her six children, Carol C. Perez of Woodbridge, Va., Charles M. Conklin II of Cumberland, R.I., David A. Conklin of San Diego, Calif., George M. Conklin of Falls Village, Patrice Dean of Sheffield and Holly Conklin High of Woodbridge; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and by eight of her nine siblings.

Thank you for honoring her memory and mourning her passing with us. A family memorial service will be held in her childhood hometown in Massachusetts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1075 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO 80204,  702-982-7850.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
