The Laurel Festival Schedule of Events

WINSTED — The town’s annual Laurel Festival makes its return June 13-15, with new and traditional events for people of all ages. The schedule is as follows:


Friday, June 13


Sidewalk Café

DJ and dancing from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Old Colebrook Road. All are welcome to join the party, which includes pizza and refreshments for sale. Admission is $5.


Saturday, June 14


Green Care Fair

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Hungerford Emergency and Medical Care will host a wellness program at the Winsted Health Center, 115 Spencer St., in conjunction with the health center’s 10th anniversary. The fair will include information on both personal and environmental health, with a Teddy bear clinic, auxiliary tag sale, ambulance and LifeStar tours, health screenings and medical information. Recycling events will include a thermometer exchange, fluorescent bulb disposal and information on disposing medications. Call 860-738-9318 for information.


The Laurel Ball


The Laurel Festival’s annual semiformal/formal buffet dinner and dance features a presentation of each contestant in this year’s festival, followed by a night of dancing. The party happens at Crystal Peak, 164 Torringford Road, Winsted. Tickets are $30 per person. Call 860-379-3922 for information.


Sunday, June 15


Laurel Parade and Crowning Ceremony

The annual Laurel Parade, featuring all contestants, will roll through town starting at 2 p.m., with participation by local firefighters, police, veterans, dignitaries and school bands. The parade travels east along Main Street into East End Park, where the crowning of the 2008 Laurel Queen happens on the Rotary Stage.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
