Gilbert bands win national awards

WINSTED — While most students enjoyed a long weekend for the Memorial Day holiday, 65 members of The Gilbert School’s band and choir were in Cleveland, Ohio, from May 22 to 25, performing at the 2008 Heritage adjudication music festival, where they received a Spirit Award and three silver medals.

The Spirit Award is presented to a school that best represents its community. This is the third time Gilbert has won the Spirit Award at an adjudication festival.

Bands were critiqued in a number of areas during the music festival. The concert choir, symphonic band and jazz band performed for a panel of judges and were rated against national standards. Based on their exemplary performances, each group came home with a silver medal.

"The best thing is the response from the kids. They keep saying that it is the best trip they have ever taken. They loved Cleveland and they loved the trip," said music teacher Scott Minnerly.

In addition to the performances, students visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Cedar Point Amusement Park.

On Monday, the band marched down Main Street in the Winsted Memorial Day parade, just hours after returning from their trip.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
