Fishing tourney Sunday at Tatro's Pond

WINSTED — Tatro’s Pond has been stocked and hundreds of Laurel City residents have been invited to the annual Elks Kids’ Fishing Tournament Sunday, May 18.

Organizer Gary Peterson said this year’s tournament will be a tribute to the late Bernice Machowski, a descendant of the Tatro family, which owned and cared for the pond before donating it to the town.

Peterson said this year’s derby will have the honorable name of the Bernice and Joe Machowski Fishing Derby.

"She was always involved with the Elks and with the derby and we’re going to have a moment of silence for her," he said.

Peterson also said a proclamation has been obtained from the town in honor of the Elks’ Youth Weekend, which includes an awards banquet tonight (Friday, May 16) at the Winsted Elks Lodge.

There will be dozens of prizes in this year’s fishing derby, which is open to all children. Registration is at 10 a.m. and the derby will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free hot dogs and soda are provided to those who attend.

Elks have been running the children’s event for approximately 50 years. Peterson said Winsted-area organizations donate more than $5,000 worth of supplies and prizes for the derby.

The derby happens rain or shine and there will be special prizes for the youngest participants. For more information, call the Winsted Elks Lodge at 860-379-8045.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
