Tri-State Chamber recognizes new businesses

SALISBURY — Members of the Tri-State Chamber of Commerce celebrated anniversaries and new beginnings at village businesses last Thursday. Chamber member Mona Staaf-Hoffman brought scissors and a ribbon that she “cut at each of the three stops that she and chamber members Candice McRee, Susan Dickinson and Sandra Gomez visited.

First stop was Lakeville Wine and Spirits, where owner Robain Ocain and her dog, Keiko, had just completed one year in their new shop on Main Street. The shop had been across Route 41/44 for many years before moving into the larger space (formerly occupied by April 56) last spring. The theme of “good spirits continued as the Chamber group moved to Salisbury Wines, where they drank a toast with Ben Snyder and store owner Warren Carter. The elegant new site for wine sales and tastings opened on Feb. 29 in a shop formerly occupied by the Salisbury Package Store.

Next door to Salisbury Wines was the grand opening of the Kinderhook Group, a real estate agency with seven offices in the area. Dickinson and Staaf-Hoffman joined new owner Ed Hoe, who had just purchased the company the previous Friday, and staffers Tim Hitchcock, Lisa Bouchard, Brenda McLean and Lynda Ott Jaeger.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
