New Milford Hospital rep seeks to establish community connection

KENT — Marydale DeBor, who has been described as a professional creative thinker and a problem solver, has now set her sights on the town of Kent. DeBor will work to improve relations between Kent and New Milford Hospital, where she is the vice president of the newly created External Affairs Department. DeBor gave a brief presentation at the Board of Selectmen meeting on March 4.

During the presentation, DeBor said that New Milford is doing "aggressive recruiting" to fill recently vacated spots at the Med/Peds primary care center in Kent. DeBor said that she hopes to have someone in place within six months to take the place of the departing Dr. David McIntosh, who is attending seminary school and is serving as a hospitalist at the hospital.

Two doctors are currently filling in the open spaces, DeBor noted: Dr. Jonathan Beck, a family practice physician, and Dr. Laurie Schedgick-Davis, board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics. In addition, a physician assistant and nurse practitioner are filling in at the Med/Peds center during the interim.

"The residents of Kent will continue to have a good source of medical care in their own community," DeBor said. "We are anxious to do more than what has been done here in the past. We have new leadership in place and we feel impressed with our responsibility to serve this area."

Staffing concerns regarding the Cancer Care Center at the hospital were also addressed in the presentation. DeBor noted that changes are a part of the medical industry and that there was little that can be done to control it.

Physicians from the North West Hematology Oncology Group have provided oncology services to patients at the cancer center for many years, she said. Recently, two of their physicians moved away from the area to take other career opportunities. Thus, other members of that group are currently caring for patients at the cancer center.

"These are oncologists who have practiced at the cancer center for a long time," DeBor said. "The transition is going very smoothly."

She went on to say that "New Milford Hospital is always adding physicians in key specialty areas to its staff."

DeBor expressed excitement at the hiring of a new contractor at the hospital who will emphasize the promotion of local foods and healthy eating.

First Selectman Ruth Epstein asked if there would be somebody at the hospital who could help assist with the town’s commitment to the Connecticut Coalition to Eradicate Lyme Disease. DeBor cited Dr. Fred Browne, an infectious disease specialist, who, according to DeBor, is an excellent speaker in addition to being versed in epidemiology and microbiology.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
