Teachers master students on the court

KENT — The teachers at Kent Center School showed that youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and experience at the game they played against the eighth grade Friday, March 14, at the school. The teachers won, 46-41.

That is not to say, however, that the students did not put up a good fight in a game that was both exciting and fast paced.

Perhaps energized by the carbohydrate-loaded spaghetti dinner that preceded the game, both teams came out of the box playing hard, with the students leading early on. The first quarter ended in a 6-6 tie, but the faculty soon rebounded and was able to take a three-point lead, 18-15, over their young charges as the game headed into halftime.

The second half saw the faculty players hold on to their lead, outscoring the students 28 to 26 to secure the victory. The faculty led the students in scoring for three of the four quarters in the game; the students outscored the teachers in the fourth, 12 to 11.

Leading the charge for the faculty on offense were physical education teacher Marci Perotti, who had 10 points in the game, seventh- and eighth-grade English teacher Brian White scored nine, seventh- and eighth-grade math teacher Mark Scozzafava had six points, fifth- and sixth-grade teacher Len Gulotta had four, as did school psychologist John Marsicano and Kent Center School boys basketball coach Alex Baker.

Assistant Pre-K and first-grade teacher Liz Borst scored two of her own, seventh- and eighth-grade science teacher Scott Eldridge added two, fifth- and sixth-grade teacher and girls basketball coach Debbie Morin tallied two, music teacher David Poirier also had two and French teacher Linda Miller added one.

On the student side, Kiera Bisenius had five points, Matt Colby scored four, Luis Davila led the eighth grade in scoring with 12, Jed Gracey had six, Kylie Jacobs scored two, Megan Leach sunk two baskets for four points, Landon Morin scored six and Ashley Hrabcsak scored two.

Lending assistance off the court at the game were Kent Center School eighth-grader Melody Sandquist, who served as the school mascot, Kent Park and Recreation Director Lesly Ferris, who kept score alongside Kent Center School Principal Ron Viafore, and eighth-graders Brynn Kallstrom and Devan Casey, who managed the student team. Selectman Bruce Adams participated on the court, but not as a player. He donned the white and black stripes to referee the game.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
