Earl Burton Smith


WINSTED — Earl Burton Smith, 86, died Jan. 5, 2008.

Born July 23, 1921, in Winsted, he was a son of Mildred (Hart) Raydenbow and Earl Smith and stepson of Ralph Raydenbow.

Mr. Smith attended local schools and served as a staff sergeant Air Corps gunner, fighting in northern France and Rhineland during World War II. He was a crane operator at the Connecticut Millstone power plant before moving to Florida to retire. Later, he moved to North Carolina, then Michigan and finally back to Winsted for the past two-and-a-half years.

Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Lee Smith, and his wife, Cathy, of Healdsburg, Calif.; two grandsons, Henry and William Smith of Healdsburg, Calif.; a sister, Mary Brown, of Canton; a niece, Noreen Marchand, and her husband, Peter, of Winsted; a nephew, Jeff Brown, and his wife, Peggy, of Canton; and a dear friend, Beatrice Peacock of Ann Arbor, Mich. He was predeceased by two brothers, Roy Raydenbow and Allyn Raydenbow.

The family thanks Dr. David Lawrence and staff for their dedicated care and to Cherry Brook Health Care Center.

A brief funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, Winsted, at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be held in the spring. Friends may call that day from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Visit an online guestbook at montano-shea.com.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
