Warrant issued for North Canaan man's arrest

NORTH CANAAN — A warrant from Bantam Superior Court has been issued for Christopher Jordano, 24, of 12 Barlow St.

Jordano is wanted for failing to appear in court on Monday on four arrests that occurred last March. He was also involved in two traffic accidents in August while driving with a suspended license.

Jordano is known locally for his dealings with his Barlow Street neighbors and the town over the landscaping contractor business he runs out of the home. Threats to safety from trucks and trailers parked in the road were the subject of a petition and concerns brought to the Planning and Zoning Commission by the resident state trooper. Jordano’s front yard and driveway were covered with the firewood he split and sold. Neighbors complained of burning wood chips routinely left unattended.

Jordano appeared at one P&Z meeting a little over a year ago. But month after month, as the commission tried to sort out his situation, he failed to appear as requested.

Not able to get Jordano to apply for a special permit for his non-compliant operation, the town ordered him to cease and desist, and eventually took him to court. A judge threw the case out because the town’s zoning regulations did not specifically address landscape contractors.

Charges such as assault, breach of peace and disorderly conduct from the March arrests brought an additional charge of probation violation.

Several years ago, Jordano and others were arrested at the house, which he was renting at the time. They were processing cocaine for sale in the home.

Jordano has made efforts to clean up the property, and refrain from parking vehicles on the street and on neighboring parking areas without permission.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
