Webutuck Warriors TEAM up to help food pantry

MILLERTON — A multitude of Webutuck Warriors invaded the Millerton Presbyterian Church Monday morning. They were part of a team, or rather TEAM, Teens Encouraging Athletes to be Mentors.

The intent of these warriors was not to destroy, however. These warriors, all student athletes from the Webutuck school district from grades nine to 12, helped the Millerton Food Pantry put together about 50 Thanksgiving food baskets for needy families in the area.

"We’re here to help families get a good Thanksgiving," student James Boeding said. "It’s all fun and good."

Each meal package includes a turkey, soup, a bag of potatoes, cereal and stuffing.

"We’re giving back to the community and helping out people who are not as privileged as us," student Mike Schnider said.

Mark Moren, adviser for the TEAM group said helping the pantry has been an annual Thanksgiving tradition for Webutuck athletes.

"It teaches the athletes about responsibility," Moren said. "It also teaches them about helping out others and not worrying about themselves all the time, especially during the holidays."

"This is a nice learning experience for them to give back to the community," pantry operator Mariley Najdek said. "They had it down to rocket science. They came in at 9 a.m., and they finished at 9:40. They also reorganized the food pantry downstairs, took old stuff out and put new stuff in. So we’re in great shape."

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
