Get those lights ready

MILLERTON — There will be a day of holiday cheer and goodwill, with plenty to do, come Saturday, Nov. 24, in the village of Millerton.

Starting at 4 p.m. there will be carolling, with participants meeting at Simmon’s Way Village Inn on Main Street. Following the carolling there will be a tree lighting at the large pine tree at the top of routes 22 and 44, by the traffic light, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. After the tree lighting is finished everyone is invited back to Simmon’s Way for hot chocolate and cookies.

"We want there to be a great turnout," said one of the event’s organizers, Susan Schneider. "The volunteers for this have come out of the woodwork, and there’s been a huge amount of effort to make this work. I just want to say thank you to everyone who has taken the time to help."

Schneider emphasized the event is open to all and said she hopes the promise of an evening of holiday cheer will lure residents, business owners and even visitors to the streets of Millerton so they can participate in the varied activities.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
